I have always used routes as opposed to a passing tree. With the way that I call plays, passing plays have three digits, running plays have two, and it wouldn't make sense to call a play 136 8024. Instead, if I want a receiver to run a different route than the automatic route, I tell him what to do. If I call 136 Michigan. The Michigan route has the ends running flags, and the halfback running a post. If I want a different route, I might call switch, where the receivers switch routes, or I might say, "136 Michigan Z OUT." That tells the halfback to run an out as opposed to a post. It might sound complicated, but I have always taught it that way and the kids get it better than a tree (my opinion!).

i agree... but i have developed mine a tad different...
we have 5 concepts that we use in our passing game... "stick/slant/curl-flat/smash/vertical" 300 is our quick passing game so i may call for example 352 300 tells pass blocking 5 is our vertical concept 2 is the defender that were reading 2 is the SS/OLB inside the CB... i call it this way b/c of alignments i may pick up on by defense and i want the QB to read the SS instead of a CB on a certain throw... My system is similar to Gridiron Gurus in that I use concepts to identify which receiver should run what route. My system relies on the use of wrist coaches so that the players can determine, by alignment what route they should run. For instance, our "0" route is our spacing concept. So in a 3x1 formation; #1 would run a mini-curl, #2 would run a sit, and #3 would run a flat route. No matter how we are aligned, the receivers only need to know what # they are and if we are 2x2, what side is the frontside.

exactly pistol jet... i use 3 man combos and use the 2 outside as the main concept wr's...
this way if its 1x3 then those 3 on the that side know that theyre doing... but if its 2x2 then the inside guy on the backside has a slightly different route... i run my concepts in play call as this: 1,0 curl-flat 1 is left 0 is right... so... 302: 300 is our quick passing game... 0 is curl flat right being executed on the RIGHT side of the field... reading the first 3 steps of the SS who is the #2 i feel that this simplifies the learning by the WR's and knowing exactly who to read takes out the second guessing of the QB so that he plays fast and confident... i submitted my half-way done power point of my complete offense and philosophy to coach pratley and as soon as i get it finished i will post it here for any and all to use and take as they please... ::edit:: i also forgot that i do have a full tree... but its only tagged by names... not numbers... so that i too can assign different routes based on what were seeing from the kids on the other side of the ball...
