We see a whole lot of 50 fronts with the DTs in 5 techs and the DEs in wide 7 techs. How would the rules for veer apply to this front? I've diagramed it below.

.......................DE.....DT..........NG.........DT........DE
................................OT...OG...C...OG...OT...TE

In my mind, we change the rule to "leave anybody outside the 5 tech instead of the 4, but is this still sound?

We only run Veer to the Shade-5 tech side and we run Midline to the 3-5 tech side.  With this D. Run Veer to the Nub side (OT side) and Midline to the TE side.  We will always attempt to  check ourselves into the correct play and we will never run Veer at a 3 technique.  We only run Midline at a 3 tech.

We would run veer and leave the 4 or wider unblocked.  In this case the 4 is the read man and the End would be the pitch read.

Coach Pratley,

I would normally agree with you, however, the defense we are seeing would also have an OLB over our slot. I'll diagram below. In this case I can't see how you can have the 5 be the give read and the EMOLOS be the pitch read. How would I deal with the flat defender.

....................................MLB.................................................OLB
........DE.........DT...........NG............DT........DE
.....................OT...OG....C....OG....OT....TE
............................................................................................Z

My solution is to move the give key out to the 5. I'll try to post examples as the season progresses.

Ok.  In this case would would check to an inside play like Midline or Trap or iso.  We would try to get them out of it.  We have also run a "wide veer" in which we try and block the DT and option the DE.

We rarely run with a TE so that is why I gave you the above advice first.  Didn't realize you had a TE in at first glance.
